  3. A variant follicular carcinoma is the oxyphil (Hurthle or Askenazy) tumour in which most of the neoplastic cells are large with bizarre- shaped nuclei and voluminous cytoplasm and which contain abundant eosinophilic granules (mitochondria) (Fig. 16.9). Oxyphil change may also be seen in papillary carcinomas, adenomas and, focally, in non-neoplastic thyroid parenchyma ΓÇô particularly in autoimmune thyroiditis.
